Douglas Gray RSMA

Douglas Gray is a highly acclaimed Yorkshire artist who was born in Wetherby and currently lives in Scarborough, enjoying spectacular views from his studio across the South Bay towards Flamborough Head.

Douglas was introduced to art at an early age by his father, who was a painter. He began his career as a poster designer for Athena, followed by a stint in advertising where his personal client list included Pepsi and Universal Studios. A career move led to designing book jackets for several major publishing companies and this finally paved the way for Douglas to forge his career as a professional artist.

“I do not live by a rigid set of rules but I do find myself painting for a good eight hours on most days, although travel is the key for me: people watching provides a fantastic source of inspiration and I enjoy recreating moments between couples or people alone with their thoughts.”

Douglas’ expressive style quickly made an impact in the world of art and a major publishing house described him as undoubtedly one of the brightest stars on the contemporary scene. Word of his talent spread quickly and he now has a host of high profile collectors buying his work.

Douglas is a regular exhibitor with the Royal Oil Painters Institute (ROI), the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and the Royal Society of British Artists (RBA).
