Ian Layton

Ian Layton was born in Mexborough,  South Yorkshire in 1953 and expressed an interest in painting from an early age.

On leaving school however he went into engineering where he served an apprenticeship as a precision engineer  developing a successful career as a designer,  while painting in his spare time.

Growing success as an artist allowed him to fulfill his desire to paint full time,  on his own terms,  dividing time between his studio and locations throughout the UK and abroad.

His paintings are a celebration of light and atmosphere;  he particularly enjoys capturing the transient aspects of weather and the “coutre jour” effect of painting directly into the light.

Ian has displayed his work at many prestigious exhibitions,  including The Royal Academy,  The Royal Society of Marine Artists,  The Royal Institute of Oil Painters,  The Royal Society of British Artists,  The New England Art Society  and The Discerning Eye at The Mall Galleries,  London.

In 2004 he was awarded The Chairman’s Purchase Prize at The Discerning Eye Exhibition.

Ian’s work is held in public and private collections around the world.
